How to resize an image for forms, social, and email

Many uploads reject oversized photos even when the file weight is fine. Resizing to a sensible pixel width — often 1200–1600px on the long edge — makes forms happier and emails lighter without opening desktop software.

Upscaling a tiny image to a large canvas cannot invent real detail — the result will look soft. Prefer resizing down from a high-quality original. When a passport or ID form lists exact width and height, unlock aspect ratio only if the instructions require a specific non-proportional box; otherwise keep the lock and letterbox or crop in a dedicated editor.

A practical order of operations for strict portals: crop composition if needed, resize to the allowed pixel range, then compress to the kilobyte cap. Doing compression first and resize later often wastes quality or misses the dimension rule entirely.
