Resize Images for Instagram, LinkedIn, and Web Forms

Recommended dimensions, aspect ratios, and file-size targets when resizing photos for social platforms and strict upload forms.

Why resizing beats compressing alone

Upload limits combine pixel dimensions and file size. A 4032×3024 photo carries far more data than any phone screen or feed card displays. Downscaling removes pixels you cannot see in the final context and often improves sharpness per inch on screen.

Platforms re-resize uploads to their internal variants. Starting closer to the target aspect ratio reduces automatic cropping that cuts off heads or product edges.

Forms that cap at 200KB or 500KB are almost impossible to satisfy at full camera resolution without both resize and compression. Resize first to hit the pixel cap, then tune JPEG quality.

Common social dimensions

Instagram feed posts are commonly 1080×1080 (square), 1080×1350 (4:5 portrait), or 1080×566 (landscape). Stories and Reels use 1080×1920 (9:16). Slightly higher source resolution is fine; far higher is wasted.

LinkedIn and Facebook favor similar widths around 1200px on the long edge for link previews and profile banners, but each placement has its own spec. Check the latest help doc before a campaign — specs do shift.

Profile photos and ID uploads often specify exact pixels (600×600, 400×514 passport-style). Match both width and height requirements; do not rely on the uploader to crop correctly.

Aspect ratio and cropping

Crop to the target aspect ratio before export so you control composition. Automatic center crops ruin screenshots with important top or bottom UI.

When a form demands a fixed ratio, use a canvas crop rather than squashing. Non-uniform scale stretches faces and text.

Leave a small safe margin for platforms that overlay rounded corners or username badges on Stories and avatars.

Quality checklist before upload

View at 100% zoom on eyes, text, and logos. If JPEG artifacts appear, raise quality slightly or crop tighter instead of uploading oversized files.

Export sRGB JPEG for web and social unless a brief explicitly asks for PNG. sRGB keeps colors predictable on phones and laptops.

Keep an unmodified original elsewhere. Resize copies for each destination rather than one-size-fits-all, because square Instagram crops differ from widescreen banners.
